    ABOUT THIS PRINT

This execution scene features at the end of William Hogarth’s popular moral series Industry and Idleness. Produced in 1747, Hogarth intended this series the emphasise the idea that ‘bad actions have bad consequences’. The character that personifies this message is called ‘Tom Idle’. Despite starting out with potential as a Spitalfields apprentice, Idle fritters away the opportunities that come his way. He goes to sea, spends time in poor company and, at length, finds himself on the wrong side of the law. In this print, Hogarth shows Idle’s story coming to its gloomy conclusion. His crime is to have treated life as mindless entertainment; he becomes the mindless entertainment himself. – Peter Moore
