ABOUT THIS PHOTOGRAPH
Hungarian-American photographer Balthazar Korab spent much of his career photographing some of the most iconic buildings of the 20th century. Designed in the late 1950s by Eero Saarinen and Associates for Trans World Airlines, the unusual terminal features sweeping reinforced concrete shells reminiscent of wings. The TWA Flight Center opened in 1962, whilst the airport was known by its previous moniker Idlewild (after the golf course the airfield was built on), before being renamed the John F. Kennedy International Airport on December 24, 1963, a month after the late president's assassination in Texas.
Despite incorporating enclosed jetways sheltering passengers from poor weather, the terminal ultimately failed to meet aeronautical advancements over the next few decades, falling into disrepair. Trans World Airlines also went defunct, and a landmark preservation campaign failed to materialise. In recent years, however, the terminal has been converted into an airport-themed hotel, restoring or replicating many of the original architectural features.– Jordan J. Lloyd
