ABOUT THIS PHOTOGRAPH
The Tour de France is an iconic annual professional road cycling race that spans over three weeks, typically held in July. First staged in 1903, it has evolved into one of the most prestigious and challenging events in the sport.
Notably, the 1966 Tour de France became the first edition to permit foreign professional teams to participate alongside national teams. This represented a significant change in the race's format, encouraging greater international competition. Before 1966, only national teams were permitted, but the inclusion of professional teams introduced a new layer of complexity and rivalry to the event. The Belgian team "Solo-Superia" emerged victorious that year, with Lucien Aimar of France claiming the individual title. This 53rd edition marked the commencement of a more modern and global era for the Tour de France, setting the stage for the diverse and competitive field of international professional teams that characterises the race in contemporary times. – Gareth Evans
