    ABOUT THIS PAINTING

    Egon Schiele made thousands of artworks – watercolours, drawings and oils paintings – during his brief lifetime, right up to his untimely death at the age of 28 during the Spanish influenza pandemic of 1918. His most frequent subject was indeed himself – his most reliable and admired model. This self-portrait is perhaps one of the most famous: the young artist at the age of twenty, with that flick of blue and purple hair, chiselled cheekbones, pouting lips – and those signature hands turned into his chest, evoking the mugshots that Schiele is likely to have seen in newspapers of the day, showing suspected criminals, photographed by the Vienna Police Department. Around 1900, it had become mandatory to include a suspect’s hands in their arrest photographs. Schiele went further, stylising the hands to an extreme (potentially inspired by the discovery of X-rays, which showed the bones of the hands), which creates a compelling composition, alongside his boyish, serene expression. – Sophie Haydock
