    ABOUT THIS PAINTING

Extreme expressions, including grimacing, is another Egon Schiele trademark – he often performed facial gymnastics in self-portraits and encouraged his models to pull playful, unflattering poses, too. As well as being visually arresting – it’s hard to look away from the subject of a portrait when an eye is screwed or a mouth contorted – Schiele was also experimenting with a new language of expression. As a sixteen-year old student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1906, the young Schiele had come into contact with Hermann Vincenz Heller, who taught anatomy. The professor had long been interested in the link between facial expressions and the soul – and was familiar with depictions of the exaggerated features of hysteria patients at the Salpêtière in Paris. This undoubtedly influenced Schiele’s subsequent artworks, including this self-deprecating self-portrait, which the artist made at the age of twenty – pulling at his own eye, his head tilted in delightful derision. – Sophie Haydock
