    ABOUT THIS PAINTING

When I first saw this stunning watercolour on the walls of the Courtauld Gallery, in London 2015, during the Egon Schiele: Radical Nude exhibition, I assumed the woman posing so sensually without her clothes on was a lover of Egon Schiele. I could not have anticipated that the model was Gertrude Schiele, the artist’s little sister, who was just seventeen years old when she raised her arm to adjust the blue ribbon in her honey-blonde hair, under the watchful gaze of her artist brother, who was, at that point, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. The intimacy between the siblings is palpable – you can see his affection for his model in the warm colour palette, the rosy hues of her knees and blushing cheeks, her face turned away bashfully. I wondered at Gertrude and Egon’s unusual relationship, and the experiences they must have shared in their childhood that might have created such an intense bond. I was surprised to discover an chaotic childhood, one in which they could only rely on each other, and where jealousies were rife. This remains one of my favourite Schiele portraits, and stands in testimony to the adoration he had for his little sister Gerti. – Sophie Haydock
