ABOUT THIS PHOTOGRAPH
In the midst of the Great Depression of the 1930s, the United States Federal government conceived of three new experimental towns under the New Deal program, with Franklin D. Roosevelt creating the United States Resettlement Administration by executive order.
Originally designated Maryland Special Project No. 1, the soon-to-be-constructed town just eight miles from Washington DC from former tobacco fields, was named Greenbelt from its inception on January 13th, 1936. The town features many buildings designed and constructed in architectural styles of the day from Art Deco to the then-new Bauhaus Modernism.
Notably, Roosevelt's wide Eleanor assisted Agriculture Undersecretary Rexford Tugwell's master plan of the area intended to function as a cooperative community, and the final plans were reviewed by the President and First Lady.
Mydan's photograph taken in August of the same year captures the frenzy of activity surrounding the brand-new construction site. – Jordan J. Lloyd
