ABOUT THIS PHOTOGRAPH
In the aftermath of WW2 and the looming threat of nuclear war, a secret program began in the mid-1950s to develop a missile that could deploy a hydrogen bomb warhead that could be conveyed by submarine. The long-range Polaris was conceived to be fired underwater on a moving platform, making it nearly impossible to counterattack, thus giving the US Navy the broad responsibility of being the nation’s nuclear deterrent. This photograph shows then-President John F. Kennedy observing the firing of a Polaris A-2 missile off the coast of Florida. The windbreaker you see him wearing was presented to him by the crews of both the USS Observation Island (the ship he was on) and the USS Andrew Jackson, the submarine that fired the missile. This image was cropped from the original which showed the presence of television crews filming the event.– Jordan J. Lloyd
