    ABOUT THIS PAINTING

This is one of Egon Schiele’s most iconic artworks. In it, two naked bodies, a man and a woman, grasp and cling to one another, as if for dear life, the top half of their bodies pulled as close as possible – yet their hips placed a distance away, to show there is more to the display than sexual desire. The Embrace is an artwork about intimacy. It’s about the hunger to know and be known by another. The model for this artwork is Schiele’s wife, Edith, to whom he has been married for two years, and who has become a more confident model in that time. The artwork deliberately evokes (and distorts) the style of Schiele’s mentor, Klimt, and The Kiss. Ultimately, this is a painting full of longing, a glimpse into lovers’ shared souls. Look at the way his muscular arms encircle her, the position of her hands around his neck, the fingers splayed, like two jigsaw pieces about to be joined together; the way he seems to be whispering to her, loving words that nobody else but her will ever get to listen to. Sadly, less than a year later, both Egon and Edith would die in the Spanish influenza epidemic of 1918, which makes this stunning oil painting all the more poignant. – Sophie Haydock
