ABOUT THIS PHOTOGRAPH
Working on any city image is a committed exercise of research and extreme color work. Every building is identified and catalogued and resourced. Thankfully, every building in NYC has been photographed and catalogued multiple times over the last 150 years. If it hasn’t been photographed, then it was drawn, painted or sketched, There’s a record, and it can be found.
Far more of a challenge (than the buildings themselves) is achieving an accurate feel at street level. I grew up in NYC. There is nothing quite like a morning such as this. It is a holiday. The rising sun is just reaching down to the streets & pavement. The flags snap smartly in the breezes, catching those morning rays. The Empire State Building is brand new. The newest, tallest, building in the world. What a sight that must have been to behold. – Deborah Humphries
