ABOUT THIS PHOTOGRAPH
The Ronde van Nederland, also known as the Tour of the Netherlands, is a prestigious and challenging professional cycling race that takes place annually in the Netherlands. The race typically covers various terrains, including flat roads, hilly landscapes, and occasionally challenging climbs, providing a diverse and demanding course for the participating cyclists.
With a history dating back to its inception in 1936, the 1965 Ronde van Nederland marked a memorable edition of the race with a distinctive moment involving the legendary Dutch cyclist, Jan Janssen. Janssen, who would later become the first Dutchman to win the Tour de France in 1968, showcased his remarkable skills during the 1965 Ronde van Nederland. In a thrilling stage that included a challenging time trial, Janssen demonstrated his prowess against the clock, securing a significant lead over his competitors. His outstanding performance not only earned him the stage victory but also propelled him to the overall win of the 1965 Ronde van Nederland. This victory was a pivotal moment in Janssen's career, foreshadowing the success that would later culminate in his historic Tour de France triumph three years later. – Gareth Evans
