ABOUT THIS PHOTOGRAPH
Monsen was one of several photographers operating at the turn of the century in this part of America, alongside his more famous contemporary Edward S. Curtis. Walpi ('Place of the Notch') is a Hopi village in what is now Arizona that has been continuously inhabited for over a thousand years. Pictured is Kauowena, who according to the caption was the oldest woman in Walpi–the unnamed child is separated by four generations. As ever, traditional dress is difficult to research but the distinct twill pattern on the child is very similar to the Pusal'hoya, a baby boy's blanket. I sampled the building plaster from contemporary colour photographs of the village.– Jordan J. Lloyd

Update on U.S. Orders
We're pausing US shipping from 18 August 2025 while we update our checkout.
Due to a U.S. government executive order, all UK to U.S. shipments will soon be subject to additional tariffs, effective 29 August 2025. While the exact amount isn’t confirmed, we expect it to be around 10% of the item value or a flat $80 per item if duties aren’t paid.
As a small business, we need time to assess the impact and ensure we protect both ourselves and our customers. The USA is our second-largest market after the UK, and although we’re confident this will be resolved soon, we are temporarily halting U.S. sales.
